Tane Mahuta Group- day 1. look around the school

I am part of the Tane Mahuta Group
Our job is to keep the place looking good and welcome back bird life by making it so they want to live here. 

Today we are thinking of things we can chuck into the school to make the birds welcome. We walked around the school area and looked to see what we could do. When we got back to class we thought about ideas, and wrote them on a bit of paper. One of my ideas was to make bike track with bird-trees around it. 

My favourite area in the school is the native planting out the front and the community gardens because they have birds in them. 

My best idea to improve our school is to plant plants that birds love. Where they can hang out, build nests and eat the berries. We also want to put a marshland in front of the new buildings and plant the old plants that used to be here before we put concrete everywhere.

Filter systems-experiment

What is filtration?

Filtration is separating solids from liquids by adding a medium through which only the liquid can pass. 

Examples are:

1.  coffee jug/plunger
2.  RO unit for fish tanks
3.  pool filter
4. water treatment plant that gets water from lake

Aim

Materials

1. Tissue/filter paper

2. Sand

3. Pebbles

4. Scissers

5.large plastic bottle 

6. Dirty water

Process 

Step 1

Cut the bottle at the bottom of the sticker to create a funnel and container

Step 2

Put the funnel in the container 
Step 3

Fold a piece of filter paper and place it in the bottom of the funnel . 

STEP 4

Put sand into the cone shaped paper and gently push down, fill up the cone and around so its level cover the sides too.  

STEP 5

Tip in a layer of pebbles and tap them down

STEP 6

Slowly pour dirty water in the top and watch it become clearer

you can pour the water through the filter again to make it even more cleaner. 

Measurements

Write a short sentence about the water every 1 minute. 

Include 'How much water has filtered through', 'How fast it is dripping through', and 'How clear the water is'.

min 1. A few drips have come through. 

min 5. there is just enough water to have a wee sip 

min 10. there is about a cm of water in the bottom. 

Conclusion

overall our filter worked well. If you were stuck in the desert you could use this filter system to filter some water and live. You could even make two of them to double the power. 

Monkey-break

In the last week we have been creating a stop motion animation

What is stop motion?
when you quickly move characters and make it look like a movie and take pictures of the slight movement in the model clay. You take all of the pictures and put them all together to make it look like a movie.
What have you done so far?
Me and my group have made a storyboard sketches, this has pictures of whats going on, the characters doing stuff. Red means the character is moving and the blue means it is still. we have written a plan and story.
What do you still need to do?
We still need to make the characters out of clay and get them acting. We need to make a background and write a script and make all the stuff like the cage and the big friendly giant.
Brief outline of your story
The story is about a monkey trying to escape from his enclosure. first he tries to use a banana as a key but it didn't work. Then he tried to bend the bars but it hurt him. Then he tried to steal the key from the guard and it was the wrong key. Big friendly giant hears monkey screaming in frustration and then he goes and picks up monkey and brings him to his house to live happily ever after.

Summer Learning Journey to Germany

The capital city of Germany is Berlin, there are more than 6 million people there who mostly speak German. In Berlin it is -1 degrees Celsius in January, that is so cold that you could make ice blocks outside. Berlin is located in the north east of Germany.

procedure writing

WALT We are learning to write procedures.
These are instructions for how to make or do something.
We wrote procedures for how to make a sandwich and how
to take a screen shot and insert it in a document.

How to make a cheese sandwich

By following these instructions you will be able to make a cheese sandwich.

Needs/Equipment

Plate

Knife

Cheese

Bread

Butter

Grater

Chopping Board

Pickles

Carrot/Pineapple/Relish/Hot Sauce/Lettuce/Tomato/Peppers/Mustard/Capsicum/Ham/Meat

Steps

          

Wash and dry your hands

Get your chopping board

Get your bread and cheese

Cut 2 slices off your block of cheese

Get your two bits of bread out of the packet and chuck your bits of cheese on one of

the slices.

Slop one pickle on top of the cheese

Place the other piece of bread on top and press down lightly to squish it together a bit.

Take the knife and cut it in halves

Eat your sandwich

Check

Taste your sandwich if it does not taste yummy enough, add more pickles.
